As most visitors know, life at Versailles was lived large and in public: glittering balls, lavish garden parties, stunning shows of the world’s most beautiful horses. But the palace built by Louis XIV was also a private home, albeit a sumptuous one: designed and decorated to please and protect its royal residents. And as in all families, successive occupants from Louis XV through Marie-Antoinette left their legacy by adding personal touches, whose charm and character bear witness to a world that wouldn’t last, but burned brightly while it did.
